What is this?

This site shows how encoding an image as a jpeg over and over leads to degredation in quality. That's it. That's the site.

History of the JPEG

"Lookest thou to me to understand the jpeg?" This query, spoken millenial ago, sparked an era of debate. Heretofore the internet had only been a collection of text document inside a series of tubes. There were primitive ways of communicating. Like with ascii art o_O. But the people yearned for something they could see; they yearned for memes.

The jpeg was invented nearly two-thousand years after the internet first entered the human imagination. A group of experts, known today only as the "Joint Photographic Experts Group", initiated a seance. The ancient programmers revealed to them an algorithm. The experts realized this algorithm enhanced the quality of any image, especially text and line art. Furthermore, they realized that repeatedly encoding an image at varying quality summons the spirit of the image to come forth. Behold, the jpeg.

There's a new jpeg image standard called "JPEG XL". As its name implies, it can be worn by extra large computers.
